In flashbacks he dreamed of his father painting new and unusual styles of art, and of the mute girl in the apartment building. When he would get drunk, Kien would write his book at night and then go over to the girls house and tell her stories of his life and she would sit there listening.
"She had deliberately waited for him one night, somehow knowing he would be relatively sober. He had arrived, smiling, and swung himself into the seat, just a little tipsy. He was a bit shy, but he seemed at home. He seemed to be saying to her that this was the night she would be talking. He even asked if she could speak to him. She shook her head no."
Kien was in his own little world spinning on top of the girl next door. Creating the new abolishing act of writing released his emotions and righted his wrongs. In reality why would anyone want to be able to write their feelings for the whole world to see? He wants his life to be there when he is not to remind himself of the personal trials he had gone through and to keep them alive. The way Kien shows his feelings toward the women in his life creates the ambiance of a deep dark secret.
